Book Review

In Between the Rails, Charles F. Mori, iUniverse, 1663 Liberty Drive Bloomington, Indiana 47403. www.iuniverse.com 800-288-4677. 6” x 9” soft cover with 356 pages; $20.95

Given the complexities of our current economy, this work should be a required read for those at the crossroads of life. The student contemplating a college-based career vs. a life in the trades and services or those confronted with a mid-life career change, desiring to follow their calling for a life on the “High Iron”.

This closely follows three men through their life-altering challenges in the railroad industry. The novice is exposed to the language of the trade for the pages are peppered with railroad jargon that serves to add a dash of reality to the written word. The reader is confronted with the personal stresses that are placed on individuals as they attempt to stay on track to seek a storied existence on the rails of America. The effects of these emotions balanced with the demands of daily routine present to the reader three well-developed characters with whom they could easily identify.

As you follow these individuals through their routines, the message is quite clear that it takes an emotionally sound individual to keep the demands of everyday life in check with a demanding career in the field of transportation. This is one of those books that some would enjoy reading more than once to see how and when a character’s life was first confronted head-on by the demands of a most demanding career.
