Syracuse: a city worth its salt! Hiawatha chose the site as capital of the Iroquois Confederacy in 1570 because of its brine springs. A mid-17th century French Jesuit fort lasted only two years. After the founding of modern Syracuse in 1805, the city supplied the bulk of the nation’s salt for many years. The canal system was fundamental to the city’s growth, then as diversified manufacturing gradually replaced salt production the city became the “Crossroads of New York State.”
